Zivilcourage?

Zivilcourage?
A stage for everyday life – acting in solidarity together

Do you often wonder how you might act in situations where you observe – or are subject to – unjust or repressive behaviour in public space? You want to act in self-defence or solidarity, and you ask yourself how this is possible?

The workshop Zivilcourage? tackles possible methods for self-empowerment and intervention in everyday scenarios of injustice. It's about encouraging action in a practical way, but also about finding strategies to deal self-reflexively with those fears that stop us from intervening or actively responding in such situations.

In recent years, homophobic, anti-feminist, racist and generally anti-humanist positions have unfortunately gained traction. The AfD, the identitarian 'movement' and other groups encourage right-wing populism. The boulevard press and political figures – both in Germany and overseas – contribute to an atmosphere in which offensive behaviour in public space and elsewhere is apparently legitimised.
In this context, Zivilcourage? appropriates the space of the theatre for us to share and develop possibilities for action together. Using the stage as a rehearsal space for everyday life, the workshop is intended to encourage participants to become (or remain) active. This means countering injustice, rather than looking away, and standing by others when they need support.

Working with concrete scenarios and through performance and role-play, the workshop will contribute to building a vocabulary of strategies for solidarity and action.

The workshop components are run by Hanna Poddig (author and activist), Bibiana Lopera (Madalena/Kuringa e.V.) and Fabian Schrader (Gesicht zeigen! e.V.) The workshop takes place in co-operation with Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, and with the support of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.

In the workshop, we will work both in small and large groups.
