An Overshadowed Anniversary
Algeria is associated with a number of issues that matter to the Left: the struggle for national independence from colonialism, the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement, and deep, thoroughgoing popular mobilization. That said, it’s also known for its authoritarian structures, aggressive extractivism, and a lack of reckoning with the colonial past.
In commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of Algeria’s independence from France in 1962, our new dossier features articles on various facets of Algerian independence, along with its political, economic, and social development. We seek to build a bridge between the past and present, helping readers to understand where the country stands today.
