Sudan has been mired in armed conflict since 15 April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum.
The war proved to be the final nail in the coffin of the Sudanese revolution, burying any hopes of social transformation following the uprising that began in late 2018. Revolutionaries had been sceptical of the subsequent power-sharing agreement between the military and civilian forces, warning that it could lead to a wider civil war, as it ultimately did. Now, regional players on both sides are feeding the conflict in pursuit of their own interests, while widespread hunger and a devastating refugee crisis continue to spiral out of control.
Today, Sudan is a geopolitical battleground — but one ignored by the international community. This new dossier seeks to shed light on the ongoing turmoil in the country, the role played by our own governments, and the efforts of revolutionary activists on the ground to revive the emancipatory spirit of 2018–19.
