Nach Trump?

[English below]

  • Leo Panitch (emeritierter Distinguished Research Professor und Canada Chair, Institut für Politikwissenschaft, York University, Toronto, Ko-Autor von «The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire» [2012], «The Socialist Challenge Today: Syriza, Corbyn, Sanders» [2019] und «Searching for Socialism» [2020], Ko-Herausgeber des Jahrbuchs «Socialist Register»)
  • Meagan Day (Autorin und Aktivistin im «Bread and Roses»-Caucus der Democratic Socialists of America, Ko-Herausgeberin der US-Zeitschrift «Jacobin», Ko-Autorin von «Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism» [2020])
  • Bill Fletcher Jr. (antirassistischer und Gewerkschaftsaktivist beim «Center for Labor Renewal», Autor mehrerer Bücher für eine bewegungsorientierte Gewerkschaftsstrategie, darunter «Solidarity Divided» [2008] und «They're Bankrupting Us! And 20 Other Myths about Unions» [2012])

After Trump

Perspectives on Empire and Socialist Politics in the United States

The United States has grown increasingly polarized under four years of Donald Trump – socially, politically, and culturally. It is also unclear whether Donald Trump will accept an election defeat at all, and what role extreme right-wing militias such as the Proud Boys will play should the results be close and contested, as they were last in 2000. The major question, however, is: how will the state apparatuses react to a possible post-election crisis?

At the same time, the question arises for the US Left of which strategy it will pursue after the defeat of socialist electoralism in the form of the Bernie Sanders campaign. How wilö the trade union movement react to the election results? What perspectives are developing for the social movements, especially Black Lives Matter?

These questions about the future of the US under its new (or old) president are at the centre of this panel discussion. We are pleased to have welcome a number of high-profile activists and intellectuals.

  • Leo Panitch (Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus and Canada Chair, Institute of Political Science, York University, Toronto, co-author of "The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire" [2012], "The Socialist Challenge Today: Syriza, Corbyn, Sanders" [2019] and "Searching for Socialism" [2020], co-editor of the Socialist Register)
  • Meagan Day (author and activist in the Bread and Roses caucus of the Democratic Socialists of America, staff writer at Jacobin Magazine, co-author of "Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism" [2020])
  • Bill Fletcher Jr (anti-racist and union activist at the Center for Labor Renewal, author of several books for a movement-oriented union strategy, including "Solidarity Divided" [2008] and "They're Bankrupting Us! And 20 Other Myths about Unions" [2012])
  • Chair: Ingar Solty (Institute for Critical Social Analysis, author of "The USA under Obama: Charismatic Rule, Social Movements and Imperial Politics in the Global Crisis" [2013] and "The Coming War: The USA-China Conflict and its Industrial and Climate Policy Consequences" [2020])
