Description
Precarious working conditions at universities are not a German phenomenon. In many countries, young academics and students in particular suffer from a system of academic precarity characterized by insecure and short contractual relationships and particularly asymmetrical power relations. But while the protests in Germany, which gather under the hashtag #IchBinHanna, are mainly (with the exception of the TVStud movement) aimed at public appeals and outrage in order to push through a fair reform of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG), academics in many places in the USA and UK have discovered the path of unionization for themselves. They tried out new and old forms of strike action and achieved their first successes at their universities. As part of our online event, we would like to discuss these experiences of organizing and striking with our guests.
