Griechenland, Lesbos, 2017. Seit Monaten protestieren Geflüchtete gegen die menschenunwürdigen Lebensbedingungen im Lager Moria. Am 18. Juni findet ein friedlicher Sitzstreik ein gewaltsames Ende. Die Polizei stürmt das Flüchtlingslager und nimmt auf brutale Weise 35 Männer fest. Neun Monate lang müssen sie im Gefängnis ausharren, bevor ihnen ein Gerichtsprozess gemacht wird, obwohl es keinerlei Beweise gegen sie gibt. «Soweit ich das verstehe, bin ich nur festgenommen worden, weil ich schwarz bin», schließt Didier Ndiay aus dem Senegal.

Der erste Teil des Films folgt den verschiedenen Protesten und der Festnahme der 35 Männer im Lager Moria. Im zweiten Teil wird der Gerichtsprozess gegen die Geflüchteten begleitet und es wird ein Ausblick auf ihre verschiedenen Lebenssituationen nach Verkündung des Urteils gegeben, die von einem Leben in Freiheit bis hin zu Haft und Abschiebung reichen.
Der Fall der Moria 35 ist paradigmatisch für eine fortlaufende Kriminalisierung von Geflüchteten auf den Griechischen Inseln seit Abschluss der EU-Türkei Erklärung. Daher wird es zu Beginn des Filmes eine kurze Einführung zur Situation von Geflüchteten seit dem Deal zwischen der EU und der Türkei vom März 2016 geben.

In Anschluss an den Film gibt es eine offene Diskussion mit dem Regisseur Fridoon Joinda, der selbst als Geflüchteter auf Lesbos lebte und zahlreiche Filme über die Situation auf der Insel gedreht hat, sowie mit der Produzentin Valeria Hänsel, die als Teil von der Organisation bordermonitoring.eu und kritnet des Netzwerks für kritische Migrations- und Grenzregime-Forschung auf Lesbos tätig ist.
Bei den Veranstaltungen in Göttingen und Berlin wird zudem die Rechtsanwältin Lorraine Leete, die seit 2 Jahren im Legal Centre Lesbos Rechtsberatung für Geflüchtete durchführt, über die juristischen Hintergründe informieren.

Der Eintritt ist frei. Der Film wird auf Englisch gezeigt.

Moria 35

Greece, Lesbos, 2017: For months, refugees have been protesting against the inhumane living conditions in Moria camp. On 18 June, a peaceful sit-down strike comes to a violent end. The police storms the refugee camp and brutally arrests 35 men. For nine months, they have to wait in prison before facing a trial in court, even though there is no evidence against them. "As far as I understand, I was only arrested because I am black," said Didier Ndiay from Senegal.

The first part of the film follows the various protests and the arrest of the 35 men in Moria camp. The second part accompanies the trial of the refugees and gives an outlook on their different life situations after the sentence, ranging from a life in freedom to imprisonment and deportation.

The case of the Moria 35 is paradigmatic for the ongoing criminalization of refugees on the Greek islands since the conclusion of the EU-Turkey Deal. Therefore, at the beginning of the film, there will be a brief introduction to the situation of refugees since the deal between the EU and Turkey in March 2016.

The film will be followed by an open discussion with director Fridoon Joinda, who himself has lived as a refugee on Lesvos and has made numerous films about the situation on the island, and with producer Valeria Hänsel, who is working on Lesvos for the organization Bordermonitoring and the Network for Critical migration and Border Regime Studies. At the events in Göttingen and Berlin, the lawyer Lorraine Leete, who has been providing legal advice for refugees at the Legal Center Lesvos for 2 years, will also provide information on the legal background.
