The right to abortion is a global feminist and also left-wing aim. It is guaranteed in some cases in Latin American countries such as Brazil and fully legalised in other countries such as Argentina. Even so, access to abortion has been threatened by ultraconservative organisations and far right governments, like Javier Milei’s amongst many. In Germany, the campaign “Abtreibung legalisieren – jetzt!” (Legalise abortion – now) is currently mobilising to push for a legalisation of the right to abortion so as to prevent a backsliding by the next government. The one-hour-documentary Verde Esperanza shows experiences from Brazil and Argentina.
The film indicates possible paths and strategies for defending the rights of women and people with the capacity to gestate. Showing victorious experiences of decriminalisation in Argentina and Colombia, Verde Esperanza goes far beyond the question for or against abortion rights and reflects the current debate on access to legal abortion in Latin America. What is the situation of access to abortion in Latin America at the moment? What has changed in the last years and due to the powerful struggles? How far can the Latin American experience inspire the German struggle?
These and other questions will be discussed after the screening.
