13 July 2026: Movie : Queer life in Georgia

The director Lia Jaqeli, born 1951, studied philology and has worked many jobs, including as a senior researcher at the Caucasus House from 1986 - 2002. Since 1999 Lia Jaqeli has been working on human rights advocacy. As an accomplished documentary filmmaker, she highlights the  lives and struggles of women and other marginalized groups; her films are widely and effectively integrated into educational programs by various international and local organizations.

Her film “Mom, Dad, I’m Gay” tells the personal stories of young gay and lesbian Georgians fighting for a dignified life despite the harsh critique of the influential orthodox church and nationalists. The documentary was filmed ahead of the first-ever IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) in Tbilisi.

The second film of the evening “2014” focuses on one of the most well-known cases of femicide in Georgia. Beyond the focus on the crime and mourning, Lia highlights how such crimes are exacerbated by legislative gaps, law enforcement incompetence, and societal indifference.

Before the film viewings, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is organizing a panel discussion with the film director Lia Jaqeli and a founding board member of the Documentary Association Georgia, Anna Dziapshipa. The panel will be moderated by Tamar Qeburia, historical researcher at the Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung (IOS) in Regensburg.
