„Beyond the WTO? Rising Protectionism, Geopolitics, and the Future of Global Food Security“
As global trade dynamics shift amid rising protectionism, geopolitical tensions, and deepening food insecurity, this three-part webinar series explores how developing countries can reclaim policy space and build resilient, equitable and sustainable food systems through agricultural trade justice and strengthen food sovereignty.
The inaugural dialogue in the Rethinking Agricultural Trade for Food Sovereignty and Justice webinar series examines how shifting geopolitical dynamics and rising protectionism are reshaping global agricultural trade and food security. While trade liberalization has long been promoted as a pathway to food security and economic development, recent crises have exposed significant vulnerabilities associated with dependence on global commodity markets and highly concentrated supply chains. The discussion will ask whether countries most affected by food insecurity and market volatility should continue to rely primarily on WTO-centred approaches, or whether they should explore alternative regional and international frameworks that prioritise relilience, food sovereignty and development objectives.
