On Friday, 19 July at 18:00 (Brasília time), the Cultural House of the Brazilian People in São Paulo will host the event Democracy At Risk in The Global North: The Rise of the Far Right at The Capitalist Core, to take place in its auditorium. The meeting is being held by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the publishing house Expressão Popular, Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), and the media outlet Brasil de Fato.
Attendance is free and the event will be streamed live in Portuguese on the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s YouTube channel (@fundacaorosaluxemburgo) and in German and English on Zoom. Register here to watch the livestream in German and English!
The discussion panel includes the German member of parliament Ferat Koçak, of Die Linke, known for his work promoting policies dedicated to addressing anti-fascism, refugee rights, and climate change. Other participants include members of the French Communist Party, the organization The People’s Forum, and the Brazilian Society Analysis Center (CASB).
The discussions will centered around the recent elections in the United States and Europe, exposing how the far right has been advancing while promoting a xenophobic, conservative agenda threatening to impose setbacks on social rights. The goal is to look into the current political scenario in core countries of global capitalism and discuss how the left can respond to this offensive from a perspective of international solidarity between the peoples.
In his visit to Brazil, Koçak will attend events with members of parliament and left-wing organizations, including the Workers’ Party (PT) and the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), in addition to NGOs and grassroots movements. “I am excited to provide a contribution with my international perspective to enrichen the conversation about the challenges facing the left both in Brazil and in Germany,” the MP said.
The event aims to discuss the challenges facing the Left and empower international solidarity between progressive movements. The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is a German non-profit institution connected to Die Linke, and it aims to promote political education and social critique, supported by the tradition of workers’, feminist, anti-racist, and anti-fascist movements.
