Mit einem breiten Spektrum dokumentarischer, fiktionaler, essayistischer und experimenteller Formate widmet sich das Kurzfilmprogramm der Tatsache, dass sich noch immer ein Großteil der visuellen und materiellen Kultur des afrikanischen Kontinents in westlichen Museen und Archiven befindet. Was bedeutet es, fragen diese Filme, dass Skulpturen, Fotografien, Filmrollen, Tonaufnahmen, Tiere und sogar Menschen aus Afrika, Asien und Ozeanien in Europa und Amerika zur Schau gestellt werden? Wie wurden diese «Ausstellungsstücke» überhaupt erworben, und welche Rolle spielte der transatlantische Handel, Imperialismus und Kolonialismus dabei? Gemeinsam untersuchen diese Filme, wie eine Dekolonisierung von Erinnerungskulturen aussehen könnte – sei es durch die Forderung nach Rückgabe der «Objekte» oder auch den Versuch, diese aus der Gegenwart heraus zu rekontextualisieren und neu zu verstehen. Es sind gleichsam Versuche, die epistemische Gewalt zu thematisieren, die den kolonialen Sammlungspraktiken innewohnt, und Wege zu finden, einen Heilungsprozess anzustoßen.

On Colonialities, Ownership and Loss

Followed by a discussion with Ariella Aïsha Azoulay

Spanning a range of essay, experimental, fiction and documentary styles, these short films share a focus on interrogating the reality of the fact that so much of Africa’s visual and material culture is located in Western museums and archives. What does it mean, they ask, to have these sculptures, photographs, film reels, sound recordings, animals, people etc., from Africa, Asia and Oceania overwhelmingly on display in Europe and America? How were these acquired in the first place and how did colonialism play into that process? Taken together, these films explore what it might look like to decolonize memory cultures, either by calling for the return of objects, or in some cases, by attempting to re-contextualize and re-read them from the present. They are attempts to address the epistemic violence inherent in colonial collection practices and to find ways to initiate a healing process.
