"Als meine Großmutter mir zum ersten Mal von Gustavs Angebot erzählte, fragte ich sie, wie es sich angefühlt habe zu begreifen, dass sie für immer ihre Freiheit verloren hatte. 'Ich war nie unfrei', widersprach sie. 'Was die meisten Leute für Freiheit halten, ist in Wahrheit eine Art Knechtschaft der Gefühle, Unterwerfung unter starke Emotionen: Angst; Gier, Neid. Ich glaube, frei sind wir nur, wenn wir versuchen, das Richtige zu tun.'"

Als Lea Ypi im Internet ein ihr unbekanntes Foto entdeckt, das ihre Großeltern 1941 beim Après-Ski in den italienischen Alpen zeigt, fragt sie sich, was sie wirklich über ihre Familie weiß. Warum hat ihre geliebte Großmutter Leman, genannt Nini, Französisch gesprochen, wenn sie doch in Saloniki aufgewachsen war, als Enkelin eines Würdenträgers? Was hatte sie bewogen, als junge Frau Griechenland zu verlassen und auf eigene Faust nach Tirana zu gehen? Wie war sie mit Asllan zusammengekommen, ihrem Mann, der bald für viele Jahre in einer »Universität« verschwand? Und warum lächelte sie im Schnee von Cortina und zu einer Zeit, in der es nichts zu lachen gab, weil in Europa ein grausamer Krieg tobte?

Lea reist an die Orte von Lemans Leben, um es Stück für Stück anhand von Archivalien, Akten und Anekdoten zu rekonstruieren. Gebannt folgt man ihr in die untergegangene Welt der osmanischen Aristokratie, an die Wiege der neuen Nationalstaaten auf dem Balkan und natürlich nach Albanien, erst unter faschistischer Besatzung, dann unter kommunistischer Herrschaft.

Fesselnd, empathisch und in ihrem unnachahmlichen Ton erzählt Lea Ypi in Aufrecht von den Wendepunkten eines Lebens in extremen Zeiten von schicksalhaften Begegnungen, von Liebe und Verrat sowie von Entscheidungen gegen den Strom der Geschichte. Ihr neues Buch ist atemberaubende Familiensaga und tiefgründige Reflexion über die Zerbrechlichkeit der Wahrheit. Mit der Kraft der Imagination setzt es Menschen ein Denkmal, die ihre Würde zu bewahren vermochten, als sie mit Stiefeln getreten wurde.

Es sind die großen Fragen eines Lebens, die Lea Ypi in ihrem neuen Roman über die Geschichte ihrer Großmutter verhandelt. Und wie auch schon in ihrem ersten Roman "Frei" spielt der Begriff der Freiheit erneut eine große Rolle. Im Gespräch mit Jagoda Marinić soll entlang der Erzählung eine Annäherung an diese großen Fragen des 20. aber auch des 21. Jahrhunderts möglich werden.

Lea Ypi ist Professorin für Politische Theorie an der London School of Economics, Mitglied der British Academy und der Academia Europaea sowie Permanent Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Sie hat unter anderem in Paris, Oxford, Stanford, Berlin und Frankfurt am Main geforscht und gelehrt, regelmäßig schreibt sie für The Guardian. Ihr autobiographisches Sachbuch Frei, das in mehr als 35 Sprachen vorliegt, gewann den renommierten Ondaatje Prize sowie den Slightly Foxed First Biography Prize. Außerdem wurde es für die Bühne adaptiert.

Jagoda Marinić ist Schriftstellerin, Publizistin und Podcasterin. Sie ist feste Kolumnistin für den »Stern«, international publizierte sie bereits in der »New York Times«. Zudem ist Jagoda Marinić Host des erfolgreichen ARD-Podcasts »FREIHEIT DELUXE« und wurde mit der Moderation in ihrem »arte«-Talk »Das Buch meines Lebens« für den Grimme-Preis nominiert. 2022 wurde sie als Kulturjournalistin des Jahres ausgezeichnet.

Britta Steffenhagen ist Schauspielerin und Hörbuchsprecherin und als Moderatorin und Redakteurin in Rundfunk und TV (u.a. rbb und radioeins) tätig.

Indignity: A Life Reimagined
Reading and discussion with Lea Ypi and Jagoda Marinić

When Lea Ypi discovers a photo of her grandmother, Leman, honeymooning in the Alps in 1941 posted by a stranger on social media, she is faced with unsettling questions. Growing up, she was told records of her grandmother’s youth were destroyed in the early days of communism in Albania. But there Leman was with her husband, Asllan Ypi: glamorous newlyweds while World War II raged.

What follows is a thrilling reimagining of the past, as we are transported to the vanished world of Ottoman aristocracy, the making of modern Greece and Albania, a global financial crisis, the horrors of war and the dawn of communism in the Balkans. While investigating the truth about her family, Ypi grapples with uncertainty. Who is the real Leman Ypi? What made her move to Tirana as a young woman and marry a socialist who sympathized with the Popular Front while his father led a collaborationist government? And why was she smiling in the winter of 1941?

By turns epic and intimate, profound and gripping, Indignity explores what it means to survive in an age of extremes. It reveals the fragility of truth, both personal and political, and the cost of decisions made against the tide of history. Through secret police reports of communist spies, court depositions, and Ypi’s memories of her grandmother, we move between present and past, archive and imagination, fact and fiction. Ultimately, she asks, what do we really know about the people closest to us? And with what moral authority do we judge the acts of previous generations?

Lea Ypi addresses the big questions of life in her new novel about her grandmother's story. As in her first novel, Free, the concept of freedom once again plays a major role. In conversation with Jagoda Marinić, the narrative will provide an opportunity to approach these big questions of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Lea Ypi holds the Ralph Miliband Chair in Politics and Philosophy at the London School of Economics. Her first trade book, Free: Coming of Age at the End of History won the Ondaatje Prize and the Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize and was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Costa Biography Award. It is translated into over thirty languages.

Jagoda Marinić is also the host of the successful ARD podcast FREIHEIT DELUXE and was nominated for the Grimme Prize for her presentation of the arte talk show Das Buch meines Lebens. In 2022, she was named Cultural Journalist of the Year.

Britta Steffenhagen is an actress and audiobook narrator and works as a presenter and editor in radio and television (including rbb and radioeins).
