Social justice between social gaps and the theses of the alternative economy in the Arab region

Under the framework of the cooperation between the Arab Forum for Alternatives (AFA) in Cairo (http://www.afaegypt.org/) and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung North Africa Office (www.rosalux.de) on social justice and economic alternatives, a conference under the title " social justice between social gaps and the theses of the alternative economy in the Arab region" will be held in Tunis on 16-17 September 2016. The conference will see the participation of experts, politicians, activists and academics from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Kuwait, Syria and more.

This project is part of the on-going cooperation between AFA and RLS on the issue of social justice. The centrality of social justice has emerged as a demand and as a concept since the outbreak of the Arab revolutions. Since there was no noticeable change towards the achievement of social justice, there is a growing importance to search for the root causes behind the status-quo. On top of these reasons are social and class gaps that exist in the Arab region.

Proposing economic alternatives is simply not enough, there is a need to work for the development of an integrated vision to achieve social justice. Can the propositions of alternative economy meet the challenges of the achieving of social justice? In this context, research papers that will be presented in this conference will cover two axes: the first is “the crisis of Arab regimes: social inequalities in the Arab region”, and the second axis is “the alternative economy’s theses".
