The Democracy Dialogue series, hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s Johannesburg Office, aimed to critically discuss the definitive characteristics of democracy beyond electoral processes, highlighting other relevant aspects intersecting with the current crisis of democracy under the themes of global polycrisis, ethnicity-based politics, post-genocide and post-apartheid societies, climate change, and the rise of far-right politics. The objective was also to propose new forms of transformative and democratic social contracts in Southern Africa and globally. To do this, the series sought to answer the following questions: What are currently the main threats to democracy in Southern Africa and globally? Where are these threats coming from? How are they interconnected? What strategies can progressive forces institute to promote the rise of a democratic polity that cements values linked to socioeconomic inclusion, social, and ecological justice?
