The Ecology of Political Organization

Als Kollaboration von European Alternatives, der Werkstatt für Bewegungsbildung und der Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung freuen wir uns, unseren ersten Transnational Organizing Talk mit Rodrigo Nunes am 21.Juni 2022 um 19:00 Uhr in der Laika Bar in Berlin-Neukölln anzukündigen. Die Veranstaltung wird in englischer Sprache von den Spadework-Co-Gastgeber*innen Antje Dieterich und Daniel Gutiérrez moderiert. Wir laden Euch herzlich ein, mit uns ein kühles Getränk zu genießen und zu quatschen.

Transnational Organizing Talks

Die Idee bei der Organisation dieser entstehenden Gesprächsreihe ist es, ein Forum zu schaffen, in dem die eingeladenen Redner*innen nicht nur zu den Aktivisten*innen und Organizer*innen sprechen können, die an den vordersten Fronten der heutigen emanzipatorischen Auseinandersetzungen kämpfen, sondern auch mit ihnen.

Um das zu erreichen, müssen wir die Bühne abschaffen und die Redner*innen auf Augenhöhe bringen, wo sie nicht als Expert*innen, sondern als Gesprächspartner*innen und Weggefährt*innen auftreten können, um gemeinsam an denselben Problemen zu arbeiten, mit denen wir alle konfrontiert sind, wenn auch aus unterschiedlichen Positionen und mit unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen.

Der gemeinsame Weg, den wir gehen, zielt auf die Freisetzung transnationaler Fähigkeiten, um die Welt zu verändern und sozial gerechte, ökologische und planetarische Formen der sozialen Reproduktion zu entwickeln. Die Krisen unserer Epoche verlangen, dass wir neue organisatorische Fähigkeiten artikulieren, die nicht nur transversal von vielen lokalen Punkten ausgehen, sondern in koordinierter und komplementärer Weise auf transnationaler Ebene zusammenkommen. Nur wenn wir das Lokale und das Nationale überwinden, werden wir die Kraft aufbringen, einen demokratisch solidarischen Weg aus den heutigen Krisen zu finden.

Ziel dieser «Transnational Organizing Talks» ist es daher, die großen Fragen und die organisatorischen Hindernisse, die uns im Wege stehen, anzugehen.

Über Rodrigo Nunes

Rodrigo Nunes ist Philosoph und politischer Theoretiker, der sich Anfang der 2000er Jahre in seinem Heimatland Brasilien in der Alter-Globalisierungs-Bewegung die Zähne ausbiss, bevor er nach Großbritannien zog, um dort sein Studium zu absolvieren. Von Großbritannien aus engagierte er sich in der EuroMayDay-Bewegung und arbeitete als Gewerkschaftsorganizer in der Justice for Janitors-Kampagne in Großbritannien. 2010 kehrte er nach Brasilien zurück und übernahm 2015 eine Professur an der Katholischen Universität von Rio de Janeiro. Seine transnationale Erfahrung im Bereich der Organisierung und des Aufbaus von Bewegungen hat ihm geholfen, eine Theorie der politischen Organisation zu entwickeln, die Erkenntnisse aus verschiedenen theoretischen Quellen und politischen Traditionen sowohl aus Europa als auch aus den ehemaligen Kolonien zusammenführt. 

Diese Theorie wird in seinem neuesten Werk vollständig dargestellt: Neither Vertical Nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organization (Weder Vertikal noch Horizontal: Eine Theorie der politischen Organisation). Eine umfassende Untersuchung der Grenzen der überkommenen Denkweise über Organisierung, die Ideen für neue Wege formuliert.

Transnational Organizing Talks

Our objective in organizing this talking series is to develop a forum where invited speakers can not only speak to but just as importantly speak with the activists, organizers, and movement-builders struggling on the frontlines of today’s emancipatory struggles.

To do that, we have to get rid of the stage, and bring the speaker to eye-level, where they can talk not as experts, but as companions working on the same problems we all face, together, though from different vantage points and experiences.

The common road we share is the cultivation of transnational capacities to change the world and develop socially just, ecological, and planetary modalities of social reproduction. The crises of our epoch demand that we articulate new organizational abilities that not only stem transversally from many local points but that come together in coordinated and complementary ways upon a transnational scale and level. Only by breaking beyond both the local and the national, will we forge the strength to define a democratic avenue beyond today’s crises. It is the objective of these transnational organizing talks to therefore tackle the problems of scale and the organizational obstacles that stand in our way.

About Rodrigo Nunes

Rodrigo Nunes is a philosopher and political theorist who first cut his teeth as an activist in his native Brazil in the alter-globalization movement of the early 2000s, before moving to Great Britain to pursue his graduate studies. From Great Britain, he was involved in the EuroMayDay movement and worked as a union organizer in the Justice for Janitors campaign in the UK. He returned to Brazil in 2010, and in 2015 took a professorship at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). Always one to be suspicious of dogma, his transnational experience in organizing and movement building helped him develop a theory of political organization that fuses insights from different (and often disparate) theoretical sources and political traditions, from Europe as much as from the former colonies. 

This theory is presented in full in his latest work, Neither Vertical Nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organization, a powerful examination of the limits of the inherited ways in which we tend to think of organization, and a bold, inventive proposal of new ways to do so. To help us get over the hangover left by the defeats of the 20th century, Rodrigo concentrates on the problems posed by tradition rather than the solutions it offered, and builds a conceptual framework in which they can be recast without the baggage that usually surrounds them. In so doing, he at once develops a penetrating analysis of the reasons why the debate on organization disappeared for a long time and lays a foundation on which it can start again.
