#LeaveNooneBehind: EU migration policy and the situation of people on the move at the external borders
Date: Thursday, 11 June, 18:00-20:00
With :

  • Cornelia Ernst, Member of European Parliament, Die Linke
  • Doreen Johann, political public relations Sea-Watch
  • Marta Stojić Mitrović, co-author of the forthcoming study “The Dark Sides of Europeanisation. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EUropean Border Regime”
  • Natalie Rafaella Kafkoutsou, lawyer and advocacy officer, Greek Refugee Council

Five years after the "Summer of Migration", the EU’s migration policy is focused on fending off people on the move. In Greece, but also in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, thousands of people are stuck in camps, often under untenable conditions. On Croatia’s external EU border, violent and illegal pushbacks have been the order of the day for years. These were not stopped even during the current Croatian EU Presidency - a sign that European institutions do not respect the right of asylum at the external borders.

The Commission intends to present a new asylum package before the summer. However, in view of the situation of people on the move at the European borders and in the camps, no humanitarian turnaround is to be expected. The question is rather whether the living conditions in Moria, the violence at the Croatian border and the criminalisation of migrants and their supporters are to become the norm. In this online seminar we will discuss the consequences of the EU border and asylum policy for people on the move and how the plans for policy reform should be evaluated. What must fundamentally change in European migration policy? How can people be evacuated from overcrowded camps and pushbacks at the EU’s external borders be ended?

The event will be held in German and English with simultaneous interpretation.
