Vortragsreihe: „10 Jahre arabischer Frühling – eine kritische Betrachtung"

Vortrag und Diskussion in Englisch

This lecture observes the way dominant ideology, orientalism, the ideology of “War on Terror” and Western soft power is dispersed throughout Hollywood and western-produced films. It compares Iran’s representations by the media before and after the Arab Spring and focuses on the portrayal of 2009 protests by comparing the American and some German cinematic representations of the country. Even though Iran was not directly involved in the Arab Spring, it has been stated1 that the Green Movement of 2009 could be considered a first indication of what was going to follow in the rest of WANA region and with this thinking in mind we will try to identify how Iran’s representation changed after the events of 2011 and we will examine how the cinematic portrayals of Iran could be linked with the events, which shaped the Middle Eastern landscape the last two decades, while also noticing the differences between the American and European filmography.
Filmography included: Argo(2012) , Desert Dancer (2015), Homeland (2011-2020), Rosewater (2014), The operative (2019), 6 days (2017)
