The terrible Normality of Human Rights Violations at the EU's external borders
Illegal Pushbacks, institutionalized Isolation and left Alternatives for a humanitarian Policy for Refugees and Asylum Seekers

On December 18, 2020, the 20th anniversary of the UN International Migrants Day, the Left group in the European Parliament published the “Black Book of Push-Backs” at the EU's external borders. Push-Backs at the EU's external borders are understood as the violent driving back of asylum seekers from the EU or the Schengen area by the national border police or the EU border police "Frontex". Under international law and thereby also under EU law, it is forbidden to push back people seeking for asylum without giving them the chance to register for an asylum procedure. Nevertheless, such pushbacks at the EU's external borders are a sad practice happening almost every day.

It is thanks to the “Border Violence Monitoring Network” to have meticulously documented this illegal practice on 1,500 pages in the Black Book. Hope Barker, policy analyst at the "Border Violence Monitoring Network" and co-editor of the Black Book provides the research results and gives the victims of this EU policy a voice. The Black Boof of Pushbacks can be downloaded here (Volume 1) and here (Volume 2).

Michel Brandt is a member of the parliamentary group of Die LINKE in the German Bundestag and chairman of the committee for human rights and humanitarian aid in the Bundestag. As a parliamentary observer, he examined the living conditions of the refugees in the EU refugee camps and spoke to the people living there. In the lecture, on the one hand, he reports on these personal experiences. On the other hand, he embeds them in the context of German and European politics in the fields of migration, asylum and human rights policy and develops political demands from a left perspective.
