Vortrag und Diskussion auf Englisch

This lecture looks at the formation of Arab exile spaces in Berlin. The exile marvel is brewing in a cultural flux with questions that are only beginning to be raised. Exile is meant here, as Edward Said writes, as “the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place, between the self and its true home." Western cities like London, Paris and New York would have been the expected post-2011 intellectual hubs given the large number of Arabs present within them. Yet, they have arguably all fallen behind Berlin. The cultural and political dynamics that materialise in Berlin, backed with intensity and creativity by wide-ranging institutional and grassroots support, summons Berlin and the Arab exile body to be assigned into a shared conversation.

Amro Ali is a writer and sociologist at the American University in Cairo, a member of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA), visiting fellow at Forum Transregionale Studien and the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies at Freie Universität Berlin. Ali received his PhD in political sociology and political philosophy from the University of Sydney. His work can be found at www.amroali.com
