10 years ago the revolutionary uprisings of the Arab spring seems to presage a new future for the Middle East, and possibly beyond it. Yet the decade that followed has brought devastating civil war, state breakdown and reversion to authoritarianism in most of the states that experienced uprisings in 2011. The main argument of this lecture is that rather than see these outcomes as the inevitable consequences of the uprisings they should be seen instead as an example of an understudied phenomenon in sociology and political science: counter-revolution.

Dr. Jamie Allinson is senior lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently completing a book on the Arab counter-revolutions, entitled The Age of Counter-revolution for Cambridge University Press. He is also an editor of Salvage, a quarterly journal of revolutionary arts and letters.
