Bäuerliche Proteste in Indien / Farmers' Protests in India
Vinod Koshti, RLS New Delhi

Unfortunately, we need to inform you that Jayati Ghosh needed to withdraw from today's discussion on farmers' protest in India. Still, we will have a lot to discuss about the recent developments in India with Seema Kulkarni and Kavita Krishnan. We are looking forward to see you.

Online-discussion with Jayati Ghosh, Kavita Krishnan & Seema Kulkarni, moderator: Aurel Eschmann

EN: For the last two month, Millions of farmers have been forming a blockade of India’s capital, New-Delhi. They protest the liberalization of the agricultural sector through three government bills, which is apprehended to threaten their already precarious livelihoods. Yet, this is only the most recent wave of resistance in a heterogeneous sequence of nationwide mass protests against the hindunationalist government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which have been occurring since 2019.
In this event we will discuss the socio-economic background and impact of the current farmers‘ protests, potential future scenarios as well as what contemporary India can teach us about resistance and solidarity in light of the global rise of right-wing authoritarianism.

Speakers:
Jayati Ghosh is a professor for economy (University of Massachusetts/JNU), and is Executive Secretary of  International Development Economics Associates, as well as a member of the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT). She has been consultant to many international institutions such as UN and ILO in the past and writes regularly for newspapers and journals.
Kavita Krishnan is a member of the politburo of the  Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), as well as women’s rights activist within  All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA).
Seema Kulkarni is co-founder of Society for Promoting Participative Eco-system Management, Pune (SOPPECOM) and coordinator of the activities of Forum for Women Famers rights (MAKAAM) in the state of Maharashtra
Aurel Eschmann (moderator) is doing reasearch on neoliberal and authoritarian transformation in India and is affiliated to Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung
