Vortrag und Diskussion in Englisch

The continued political influence of fake news despite the unprecedented accessibility of corrective information raises a pressing question: How can fake news impact publics which recognize its inveracity? This lecture explores that through reflecting on fake news reports, falsely referenced to CNN and BBC, which were used in the aftermath of the Arab spring to mobilize against the first democratically elected regime in Egypt's history and facilitate a military coup against it. This massively produced fake news suggested that 33 million protestors, almost the entirety of Egypt's non-aging adult population, protested against the democratic regime on 30 June 2013. Despite the extensive refutation of the authenticity of this news, it facilitated the political conditions for the ensuing military coup; not by positing the headcount as factual, but by setting up a politically productive controversy around it. Building on and developing cognitive psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky's "cognitive endowment" theory, the lecture unpacks the mechanisms by which news endows hypotheses, models, references, and relations that impact public assumptions of what might possibly be true, even when the news itself is perceived as not true. It also explores the implications of that on the new media condition, in which unmediated information exchange facilitated through social media eases fake news repudiation but also amplifies the reproduction of its endowments.
