Dossier: The War against Ukraine One Year On

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine began one year ago on 24 February 2022. Since then, horrific images of the killed and maimed, bombed-out houses, and shattered infrastructure reach us from the country daily. In total, some 8 million refugees have fled the fighting since the war began, over 1 million of whom have found shelter in Germany.

Our new dossier analyses the background and consequences of the war and gives voice to progressive Ukrainians and anti-war Russians whose perspectives are too often obscured by the fog of war. As the conflict drags into its second year with little sign of abating, we explore what it means for the future and ask what kinds of policy responses are needed to work towards a Europe — and a world — without war.
