Social-Ecological Transformation and Climate Justice

Protecting the environment and the climate have once again become major themes of political and social discourse. Not least thanks to the ongoing Fridays for Future protests, global warming and its consequences have emerged as a central political issue. Against the backdrop of increasingly undeniable ecological and social upheavals, the coming years will also be heavily shaped by debates on the ecological modernization of modes of production and living.

Political developments both in Germany and around the world will be influenced by the COVID-19 crisis, which will gradually become intertwined with other ongoing crises. Thus, the climate and pandemic can be seen as two sides of one crisis. The debates on a social-ecological transformation will feature strongly in the 2021 election year, not least because of the prospect of a Green-Christian Democratic government coalition. At the same time, current debate on a Green New Deal offers the chance to develop an alternative policy blueprint and a concrete strategy for its implementation.
