West Asia
“The people demand the fall of the regime” was one of the main slogans of the political uprisings that began in Tunisia in late 2010 and subsequently swept other countries in North Africa and West Asia. These movements were not a one-off event, but indeed had a permanent impact on the socio-political struggles in the countries involved. Another round of renewed protests kicked off in some areas in late 2019, and although the approaches, issues, and developments in each country may diverge significantly, they have in common the will for social change, just economic conditions, and political reform.
Social struggle and resistance takes place daily and in very different forms: in the teachers’ strikes in Jordan, the self-organization of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon, the films of Syrian filmmakers, or the mass protests in Liberation Square in Iraq.
This page serves to highlight and make emancipatory approaches and struggles in West Asia more transparent by providing a forum to the progressive forces in the region who are fighting for change and transformation far beyond the “Arab Spring”.
