Gil Shohat was born in 1988 to Israeli parents and grew up in Bonn. He studied history and political science in Munich, Exeter and Berlin and has worked on topics including anti-colonial activism in London from the 1930s to the 1950s and Marxist historiography in the UK. He also publishes and speaks regularly on contemporary German remembrance culture, the relationship between anti-Semitism and racism and the manifestations of the situation in Israel and Palestine in Germany.
