Friedrich Ebert

1871–1925

– Social Democratic politician; from 1905 member of the SPD party leadership; member of the Reichstag from 1912 to 1918; co-chairman of the SPD together with Hugo Haase from 1913 onward; from 1916 spokesperson of the SPD’s parliamentary group in the Reichstag; appointed Reich Chancellor by Prince Max of Baden on 9 November 1918; chairman of the Council of the People’s Deputies; and played a prominent role in the suppression of the November Revolution in Germany. First Reich President of the ‘Weimar Republic’ from 1919 until his death in 1925.
