Wilhelm Pieck

– Social Democratic and Communist politician; joined the Spartacus Group in 1916; entered military service in 1915; later worked for the illegal editorial office of the weekly paper Der Kampf in Amsterdam; represented the USPD (Spartacus League) in the Executive Council of the Workers’ and Soldiers’ Council of Greater Berlin; member of the Central Committee  of the Spartacus League and KPD in 1918; the only KPD-representative alongside Karl Liebknecht in the 33-strong Revolutionary Committee (Revolutionsausschuss) during the January upheaval in 1919; emigrated in 1933; became leader of the KPD in 1935 and then president of the German Democratic Republic in 1949.
